for the Long Range Plan for Student Growth and Achievement
Redesign Alternative Educational Opportunities to Increase Graduation Rates
SUMMER 2007
• Create an early warning system for tracking dropouts
• Implement 6th grade academies to help transition students at East & West Lee MS
• Implement a freshman orientation day for high school students
• Create a high school Teachers-as-Advisor Program
• Create a pilot freshman academy for 4 teachers and 100 Students at Southern Lee
• Create a Director of Student Resources position to track dropout issues
FALL 2007
• Offer a 20-credit high school diploma for students who have dropped out of school in an alternative, on-line setting based upon flexible and extended hours
• Create an English as a Second Language Academy in partnership with CCCC
WINTER 2007-08
• Create an Alternative-to-Suspension Program
Provide Systemic Support for Student Success
SUMMER 2007
• Restructure present secondary and elementary schedules to support more time for students to improve End-of-Course and End-of-Grade test scores
• Implement benchmark testing at the middle and high schools to track student progress toward passing End-of Course tests
• Write middle school and high school curriculum guides to improve teaching alignment with North Carolina Standard Course of Study
• Conduct a summer school teacher lab based upon Sheltered Instruction (SIOP) Model for English as Second Language students
• Continue & expand district-wide Reading Foundations elementary school staff development
FALL 2007
• Implement the Response To Intervention (RTI) model at Edwards Elementary School to detect student learning problems and to provide research based instructional strategies
• Increase district-wide bandwidth to increase student and teacher use of technology and to provide necessary conversion to NCWISE
• Support K-12 staff development initiatives to support differentiation and high yield instructional strategies
• Implement Positive Behavior Support (PBS) model at several pilot schools throughout the district to improve discipline and school climates
Raise Expectations for Student Performance
ONGOING
• Form an advisory committee to address the elimination of the achievement gap
SUMMER 2007
• In partnership with the Education Foundation, implement the “William Staton” Student Leadership program for high school students
• Utilize the North Carolina Virtual High School for additional Advanced Placement opportunities and to provide high school scheduling flexibility
FALL 2007
• Implement the SOARS program at the Middle Schools to increase the likelihood of students pursuing a post-secondary education—SOARS (Students Owning, Achieving, and Reaching for Success)
• Utilize a grant with the North Carolina Museum of Art to expand cultural opportunities for students at East and West Middle Schools
• Pursue a Partnership Grant to support extensive teacher staff development in math and science
• Initiate on-line opportunities for community college credit through the Learn and Earn Grant
FUTURE
• Create a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) themed middle school at East Lee Middle School—Fall 2008-2009
• Create an International Baccalaureate School—Fall 2009-2010
