SPORTS AND RECREATION

Enjoy golf? There are three public courses, as well as a private course designed by Robert Trent Jones. You're only 25 miles from world-class golf courses at Pinehurst. Home of the 1996 U.S. Women's Open, the 1999 U.S. Men's Open, and the 2001 U.S. Women's Open.

Golfing in the Sanford AreaSome of our local courses include:
  • Carolina Trace Country Club
  • Sanford Municipal golf course
  • Tobacco Road
  • Quail Ridge

If you're into water sports, you'll enjoy Jordan Lake's 14,000 acres of fishing, boating and water skiing fun. With the Deep River on the north and the Cape Fear River on the east side of Sanford, you will never run out of fishing spots. You can keep physically fit at our Nautilus club-one of the finest in the country.

Deep River Sporting Clays and Shooting School has been serving central North Carolina since 1989. The Deep River grounds offer shooting enjoyment to families and friends, as well as an excellent alternative for relaxing business meetings or client entertainment.

Senior citizens are not overlooked either. Special programs offer activities ranging from walking and tennis to swimming and golf. You'll also see active seniors participating in square dancing and ballroom dancing here. The Lee County Enrichment Center has its own workout facility for seniors over 55, along with daily programs, art classes, and special travel opportunities. If hot-dogs and popcorn bring fond memories of your childhood, check out a Durham Bulls Minor League baseball game, 45 minutes away in Durham, North Carolina.

And don't forget, you're only an hour away from great ACC basketball or college football at UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State or Duke University.

North Carolina is the home to three pro teams; The Carolina Hurricanes, The Charlotte Hornets and The Carolina Panthers. Sanford's mild climate enables residents to enjoy recreational activities year-round. Supported by a county-wide tax base, the Lee County Parks and Recreation Department maintains programs for all members of the family. Opportunities range from tennis to backpacking. Special highlights you'll enjoy include: a very active soccer program, a swim and racquet club, a country club, San-Lee Park and the Kiwanis Fitness Park.
